A.
A. Cálem was founded in 1859 by Antonio Alves Cálem who
dedicated the first years of his company to producing and shipping Port
wines to Brazil and Europe using Portuguese-owned clippers.
In time, the House of Cálem diversified its markets and today sells
its wines bottled at the origin to more than 30 different countries. The
House produces Port wines as well as still wine from the Douro and Dão
Demarcated Wine Regions of Portugal.
A. A. Cálem is one of the most important brands in Portugal and
one of the largest Port Houses in the trade.
Founded more than 140 years ago and still closely connected with
both the city of Oporto and the Douro region, the House of Calem overlooks
the golden river with one of the area’s most distinctive landmark
cellars. The company owns both extensive grape vineyards in the region
and ageing cellars on the waterfront at Vila Nova de Gaia, the area’s
largest Portuguese owned Port House.
A strict adherence to quality control and a stated desire to produce
the best Port wines possible have earned the House of Calem a prestigious
international reputation. The company is proud to use that reputation
to represent Portugal worldwide - combining a respect for knowledge gained
through tradition and experience with the ability to adapt to new markets
and embrace technology to complement centuries' old production methods.
The House of Calem now produces, ages and markets a number of wines including:
Port Wines: Calem Velhotes, Old Friends, Calem Reserva,
Dacosta, Quinta do Sagrado, Vintage Calem, Quinta da Foz and Quinta do
Sagrado;
Douro Wines: Lagar de Sa, Terras de Sa and Vale do Arco
Dão Wines: Lapa do Lobo
The company’s dedication to excellence has resulted in worldwide
recognition both from consumers and by experts alike, with a string of
awards dating back to the late 19th century. In 1897, the House took the
Gold Medal at the Brussels International Exhibition, the Grand Honour
Diploma at the International Competition in Marseilles, the Honour Diploma
and the Gold Medal at the Bordeaux International Exhibition. In 1898 the
company enjoyed two moments of glory, the first in Paris at the 6th National
Exhibition of Labour and the second at the International & Universal
Exhibition at Dijon. At the beginning of the 20th century, the House of
Calem continued to take further awards including Paris (1900), Rio de
Janeiro (1908), Seville (1929) and Lisbon (1932). In recent years, Calem’s
Port wines have taken gold, silver and bronze medals as well as commendations
at competitions in Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Great Britain,
Hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland.
The company's continued success has generated a number of subsidiaries
which today work together in harmony to create the Calem group of companies.
