With its recent adoption of the appellation contrôlée system and modernization efforts, Switzerland has emerged as a high-quality wine producer. The country's many lakes and rivers play a large role in regulating the effects of the Alps, and the many types of terrain sustain over a hundred different grape varieties, with Chasselas being the most popular. Known locally as Fendant, it is Switzerland's white wine.
