Chilean wine can be traced back to the sixteenth century, when Spanish conquistadors brought Vitis vinifera wines to the region. Chile's climate, described as a combination of California and France, is ideal for winemaking and currently supports more than 20 grape varieties. Chilean winemaking has exploded, growing from twelve wineries in 1995 to over 70 by 2005. Chile is now the fourth largest exporter of wines to the U.S.
