THE PREMIER CRU REDS OF JOSEPH DROUHIN

Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge

Beaune Clos des Mouches rouge

Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge

Joseph Drouhin
Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge

DESCRIPTION:

  • The Clos des Mouches vineyard takes full advantage of the sun exposure to the southeast.
  • The hand-picked grapes are brought to the winery in small 50-pound crates.
  • The grapes are then pressed and sometimes the stems are kept. An 18 day-fermentation and maceration takes place with daily pumping over and punching of the cap.
  • The wine is then put in barrels where it matures, smooths out and looses its acidity.
  • After 15 to 18 months of "elevage" in wood (old and new oak) and frequent tastings, Clos des Mouches is bottled.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: Enjoy with filet mignon, duck and ripe cheeses.

TASTING NOTES: It is distinguished by its elegance and finesse: round, velvety, and beautifully balanced. It has complexity and depth in a soft but very intense sort of way. Aromas are very refined with ripe black cherry, spices, earthy and lightly smoked notes with just the right touch of tannin. This wine can be put away for 10 years or even 20, depending on the vintage; it can also be enjoyed in its youth, with all its glorious fruitiness.

Beaune-Grèves

Beaune-Grèves

Joseph Drouhin
Beaune-Grèves

Beaune GrevesDESCRIPTION:

  • Beaune-Grèves is on a very steep slope.
  • Its name probably comes from the French word "graviers" (small pebbles), due to the abundance of small rocks mixed with brownish soil.
  • The vines of the Domaine are planted in Pinot Noir fin. Their density is extremely high and the pruning very severe.
  • No fertilizers nor weed killers are used.
  • The grapes are hand-picked and brought to the Drouhin cellars in small crates.
  • Joseph Drouhin's wine-making technique remains traditional, fermentation occurs in wooden vats with punching down of the cap and pumping over the juice.
  • The wine ages in oak barrels for almost two years and is fined with egg-whites prior to bottling.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: Well suited to great cuisine and to fine meats: grilled veal or beef would be best with a younger vintage. Fowl, white meat and stews would be ideal with an older one, since Beaune-Grèves ages extremely well.

TASTING NOTES: "A great wine, one of the most representative of Beaune, the capital of Burgundy. Intense and bright red color. The nose displays aromas of red currant with some spicy notes. With age and in some vintages, the aromas become even more marked by spicy and smoky touches, such as tobacco. On the palate, the tannins are refined and create a seductive harmony. In the aftertaste there is a marked flavor of "crème de cassis" (cream of black currant) and delicate touches of wood." - Véronique Drouhin-Boss

Joseph Drouhin
Beaune Premier Cru

  • Almost all of the Beaune vineyards are on a hillside position, at mid slope, which accounts for the large number of Premiers Crus.
  • The soil is Clay and Limestone that is Facing East/South-East, the slopes are made up of brown limestone and chalky marl.
  • As everywhere in the Côte d’Or, Pinot Noir is the only grape variety used for red wines.
  • Very special care is given to the vineyards. No weed killer or fertilisers are used:
ploughing is still the only method.
  • At harvest time, the grapes are picked by hand in small 50 pound crates which are then brought to the winery in Beaune.
  • There, the grapes are pressed with or without their stems, depending on the overall conditions of the harvest.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Besides the classic dishes served with this wine, such as boeuf bourguignon or coq au vin, any other kind of charcuterie or meats, without forgetting cheese of course, will be most welcome.

Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru

Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru

Joseph Drouhin

DESCRIPTION:

  • Besides the Grand Crus of Musigny and Bonnes-Mares, the House of Joseph Drouhin is also the owner of several distinguished Premier Cru vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny.
  • These Premier Crus are vinified separately, in the traditional Burgundian style, and then assembled together under the Premier Cru label.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

TASTING NOTES: "Fine lace and silk are the words most often associated with this wine. Bright, intense color and complex aromas evoking violet, black cherry and damp earth. According to the vintages, there are also notes of truffle and game. Refined tannins coat the palate. Good balance between texture and acidity. Long aftertaste, with notes of cherry and candied fruit." - Véronique Drouhin-Boss

Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses

Joseph Drouhin
Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses

DESCRIPTION:

  • In French, "Les Amoureuses" means "the lovers", probably one of the most appropriate names for a vineyard in all Burgundy: tasting this wine is like falling in love!
  • Officially a Premier Cru, it very often reaches the same price as other neighboring Grand Crus.
  • It is one of the Crown Jewels of the Joseph Drouhin vineyards, and no expense or toil is spared when it comes to its cultivation and vinification.
  • The vineyard itself is planted with old Pinot Noir vines whose clones are jealously kept in order to retain the genetic heritage of the vine stocks as much as possible.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: This wine should be served with delicately prepared dishes, such as "Canard aux cerises" (duck cooked with cherries) or "Boeuf aux morilles" (beef with morels). The cheeses should be ripe but not too strong.

TASTING NOTES: Les Amoureuses is a masterpiece of finesse and complexity; with its ruby or cherry-like hue, it also has a seductive palette of aromas constantly in flux: it is not unusual to first detect raspberry or kirsch flavors, followed by fleeting truffle or mushroom aromas, ending on a humus note. In some years, the nose will always retain elegance and reserved stance. On the palate, the tannins are never on the forefront but blend themselves seamlessly with the flavors. All silk and velvet, Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses leaves an ethereal impression of supreme refinement.

Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques Premier Cru

Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 2012

Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux-Saint-Jacques

Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin
Lavaux-Saint-Jacques Premier Cru

DESCRIPTION:

  • The vineyard site is located in the north of the Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin is world-famous, not only for its superlative Grand Crus, but also for all its other vineyards.
  • "Lavaux Saint-Jacques" is located at the beginning of the split of Combe de Lavaux, facing the south. "Vaux" refers to a depression in ground, a hollow, a valley, and can have different spellings.

History & tradition: Gevrey is of course the village where the Grand Cru vineyard Chambertin is located. Vines have been cultivated here since 630AD, when a certain Bertin decided to emulate the monks, his neighbors. The wine he made turned out to be spectacular - and the rest is history! The soil is lean and chalky, with a red-brown cover layer of clayey marl.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: Well suited to great cuisine and to fine meats: grilled veal or beef would be best with a younger vintage. Fowl, white meat and stews would be ideal with an older one, since this ages extremely well.

TASTING NOTES: "Sumptuous deep color. The nose reveals aromas of small and ripe black fruits combined with leather and spice. On the palate, the wine is powerful and dense with a good tannic structure. Long aftertaste". - Véronique Drouhin-Boss

Joseph Drouhin
Morey Saint-Denis Clos Sorbé

Morey-Saint-Denis Clos SorbeDESCRIPTION:

  • The village of Morey may still be in the shadow of its more famous neighbours, Chambolle and Gevrey, yet there are some real treasures to be discovered.
  • Such a vineyard is the Premier Cru Clos Sorbé, whose Pinot Noir vines are planted right in the middle of the village, on a gentle slope facing East.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: When young, it is a perfect accompaniment to red meat, roasted or in sauces. Older, game and venison are particularly recommended. Tasted blind, Clos Sorbé is, more often than not, taken for one of its neighboring Grand Crus. Even if it does not belong to this highest ranking, there is no question that it amply deserves more recognition.

TASTING NOTES: "A beautiful, bright cherry color. The powerful nose displays aromas of red fruit and exotic wood. On the palate, the wine is deep and velvety, generous and elegant, with soft tannins. Long aftertaste reminiscent of cherries macerated in brandy. A wine to discover, deserving to be better known". - Véronique Boss-Drouhin

  • Maison Joseph Drouhin owns nearly half of the Premier Cru Les Procès, next to Pruliers, another famous vineyard.

  • Soil: excellent due east exposure, on a mild incline. The soil is not too rocky, but deep and with good drainage.
  • Drouhin estate: Biological cultivation since 1990; biodynamic cultivation a few years later, 0,37 ha. (.925 acre). Average age of the vines: 59 years.

Savigny Les Beaune Serpentières

Savigny Les Beaune Serpentières

Joseph Drouhin
Savigny Les Beaune Serpentières

Savigny-les-Beaune SerpentieresDESCRIPTION:

  • The origin of the vineyard names in Burgundy goes back to the earliest inhabitants, the Celts first and then the Gallo-Romans.
  • Even before the vine had totally conquered the Côte, these people were struck by the great variety in their terroirs.
  • This explains why there are so many place-names that refer to the type of soil (stones, clay, chalk, etc.) or the daily life of the vigneron: partridge, oak tree or snakes. Serpentières thus acquired its name forever!
  • From the very beginning, the wines of Savigny were thought to be "Nourishing, Theological and Death Averters" (Nourrissants, Théologiques et Morbifuges). They were also reputed for their finesse; the monks and other eminent Church people, in their great wisdom, secured the best parcels.
  • The soil of Serpentières, a layer of Bathonian chalk mixed with sharp angular stones, is certainly responsible for the fame of this vineyard. But, it is in the painstaking cultivation of the Pinot Noir grape that the finest quality can be produced.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: Savigny-Serpentières needs three or four years before fully expressing itself, although it can improve further after five to six years. It goes best with lamb, filet mignon, veal with wild mushrooms, roast chicken. An elegant cuisine, not too strong or spicy, is obviously a requisite. In its own way, Savigny-Serpentières is an excellent example of what Côte de Beaune can produce—finesse and originality.

TASTING NOTES: "The color of this wine has no equal: its cherry-red hue catches the light in the most seductive fashion. At first, the nose is a stunning display of spices ranging from pepper and nutmeg to touches of paprika and green pepper. The sensations are subtle and never too strong. Other pleasures are to be found on the palate, such as delicate fruity flavors matching a graceful structure, a velvety texture and elegant tannins." - Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Volnay Clos des Chênes

Volnay Clos de Chenes

Joseph Drouhin Volnay Clos des Chenes

Volnay Clos des ChenesDESCRIPTION:

  • In their great wisdom, the ancestors of today's vignerons felt compelled to give a name to each parcel of land which they cultivated.
  • Transmitted through the ages, these names are like short descriptions, and are still in use today.
  • Thus, Clos des Chênes in Volnay (the enclosure of the oaks): We know that oaktrees grew there even before the arrival of the vine.
  • The Drouhin family owns a beautiful vineyard in this Premier Cru. Some notebooks written by Robert's father and grandfather have been handed down to the present generation and contain a treasure-trove of information on the vineyard itself and its history: Frosts, diseases, soil characteristics, rebuilding of stone walls, etc.
  • Volnay Clos des Chênes produces a remarkable wine, especially when tradition is respected. Robert Drouhin is fond of saying : "Enology is necessary but should never displace our traditions. If too much technology is used, all wines taste alike. They become neither good nor bad, just average. On the other hand, common sense and a deep respect for tradition will guarantee the individuality and quality that only terroir can offer".

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: In Burgundy, fowl and white meats are the choice accompaniment for Clos des Chênes: Chicken, veal, and hare. The cheeses should be on the mild side. Graceful and flavorful, Volnay-Clos des Chênes is certainly one of the most charming Burgundy wines.

TASTING NOTES: "A wine full of charm. A beautiful, intense and luminous, ruby color. A floral nose dominated by an aroma of violet, a signature of this wine. Other delicate notes can be detected, such as rose jam and wild strawberry (fraise des bois). Good structure on the palate, with refined tannins. Nice texture with floral and fruity flavors that seem to linger for a long time." - Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Vosne-Romanée Petits-Monts

Vosne-Romanée Petits-Monts

Joseph Drouhin
Vosne-Romanée Petits-Monts

Vosne-Romanee Petits-MontsDESCRIPTION:

  • Véronique Boss-Drouhin, Robert Drouhin's daughter, as the owner of Petits-Monts, is entirely responsible for its production and vinification.
  • This is an old vineyard : some vines were actually planted in the thirties.
  • No fertilizers are used. The pruning is very short, ploughing and weeding are still done by hand.
  • To preserve the genetic heritage of the vineyard, a dying vinestock is always replaced with a younger one from a neighbouring vine.
  • The grapes are still picked by hand and very gently pressed. The juice is then left to ferment in a small oak vat.
  • The skins and pips rise to the surface, creating a thick lid called chapeau (hat). Twice a day, once in the morning, once in the evening (just like in the old days), this chapeau is punched down manually, and some of the juice pumped over. This process (pigeage) allows the tannins, perfumes and colouring matter to blend harmoniously throughout and to maximize the full potential of the terroir. The fermentation lasts about 18 to 20 days.
  • The must is then put in oak barrels (Allier, Vosges or Tronçais forests) where, during the Winter, a second fermentation takes place.
  • Left to age for about 18 months, the wine is fined with egg-whites prior to bottling, a technique left unchanged through the years.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: Petits-Monts should be served at 17°C (62°F) with red meat (roasted especially), but game is this wine's finest accompaniment.

TASTING NOTES: "A wine of great elegance! Intense, deep-ruby color. Characteristic aromas of wild cherry combining with fine spice and a subtle note of musk. On the palate, the first impression is of silk. Refined tannins of great breed; lively notes. Lingering aftertaste.

Joseph Drouhin
Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

Chambertin-Clos de BezeDESCRIPTION:

  • The Grand Cru vineyard of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is found in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits.
  • It occupies a choice location with its exposure to the east and its mild incline.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Enjoy with filet mignon, duck and ripe cheeses.

TASTING NOTES: “A beautiful, intense ruby-red colour. Powerful but refined aromas. When the wine is young, the aromas are reminiscent of black cherry and dark chocolate. With age, they evolve towards notes of undergrowth, truffle and liquorice. After 15 years or so, the aromas of candied fruit remain but are mingled with nuances of leather and musk. Tannins provide a good structure, perfectly balanced by the velvety texture of the wine. The long aftertaste brings back the aromas of cherry and liquorice: a kaleidoscope of sensations”. - VÉRONIQUE BOSS-DROUHIN

Charmes-Chambertin

Joseph Drouhin
Charmes-Chambertin

DESCRIPTION:

  • The Grand Cru vineyard of Charmes is located below Chambertin, next to Griotte-Chambertin.
  • One of the most interesting spots to view vineyards in Burgundy is just on the borderline between Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin.
  • Looking north towards Gevrey-Chambertin, there lies a majestic sea of vines with Chambertin in the center.
  • The soil consists of outcroppings of limestone with thin topsoil; rocky soil with some marl.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: This is a grand wine which deserves the best accompaniment : prime meat, morels, truffles, wild hare, aged cheeses. Charmes-Chambertin is a rare and generous wine for the greatest occasions.

TASTING NOTES: "A generous and distinctive wine, often superb. The color is intense and bright. On the nose, the first impression that arises is that of cherry. Then, woody and fine spicy aromas appear, with an elegant hint of musk in some vintages. The flavors are extraordinary in their richness and harmony, neither too rough nor too heavy. The architecture of the wine is held up by fine and noble tannins, giving the body a silky texture (called "gras"). Acidity brings energy and liveliness to the whole. The aftertaste is a pure delight".- Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Clos de la Roche

Clos de la Roche

Joseph Drouhin
Clos de la Roche

DESCRIPTION:

  • Located at the northern end of Morey-Saint-Denis, very close to the border with Gevrey.
  • The geological layers of Burgundy are responsible for outcroppings of white chalk that can sometimes be seen at the surface.
  • Clos de la Roche is such a vineyard (roche in French means "rock"): a Grand Cru demanding an exacting amount of work but where the Pinot Noir thrives in spite of the difficulties.
  • It is a very hard and difficult soil to plow because of its rocky composition.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: This is an exceptional wine which requires the most refined gastronomy: filet mignon, game, wild fowl, venison, great cheeses.

TASTING NOTES: "A sumptuous wine! The color is a beautiful deep ruby. The nose is complex and brings to mind black cherries, with subtle notes of musk and cigar. The tannins seem coated by the velvety texture of the wine. The length of the aftertaste is exceptional: note of spices and candied fruit linger forever in the mouth. Clos Saint-Denis

Clos Saint Denis

Clos Saint-Denis

Joseph Drouhin
Clos Saint-Denis

DESCRIPTION:

  • Clos Saint-Denis is the smallest Grand Cru of Morey-Saint-Denis: 6.6 hectares (16.5 acres), barely 32,000 bottles for the whole world!
  • It is located just above the much larger (and therefore more famous) Clos de la Roche, on a gentle slope whose soil is composed of red brown clayey limestone strewn with small flat pebbles reminiscent of broken china.
  • This is a choice territory for the Pinot Noir grape which was planted here as early as 1203 by the first owners of this vineyard, the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Denis in Vergy (hence the name).
  • Facing due East, Clos Saint-Denis has a terroir of its own. This difference is scrupulously upheld by the exacting care given to the cultivation of the vineyard.
  • At Maison Joseph Drouhin, the yield is maintained at the lowest possible level through severe pruning and the avoidance of fertilizers.
  • The grapes are harvested by hand and brought right away to the winery where a gentle pressing takes place.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: A Grand Cru of this quality deserves great culinary preparations and the finest meats, game or venison are particularly recommended.

TASTING NOTES: Deep ruby red color. On the nose, aromas of ripe cherry, lightly spiced up by a touch of cigar and exotic wood. With age, the aromas take on animal or gamey notes. The best time to drink a Clos Saint-Denis is when the wine is mature (five-to-ten years of age, depending on the vintage) in order to enjoy the perfect harmony that exists between acidity, "gras" (velvety texture) and tannin. A lingering aftertaste of candied fruit is characteristic of this delicious wine." - Véronique Drouhin-Boss

Corton Bressandes

Corton Bressandes

Corton Bressandes

Joseph Drouhin
Corton Bressandes

DESCRIPTION:

  • Corton and the other Corton vineyards (such as Corton Bressandes) are the only red Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune.
  • They are located on the hill of Corton, clearly visible from miles around and capped by low-growing oak trees.
  • The vines are on a rather steep slope with a good south-east exposure.
  • The name comes from "curtis" (the word for an estate in Gallo-Roman times) and Othon, the Emperor who owned this vineyard.
  • Since the wine travels well, it soon acquired great fame around the world. Bressandes (people from Bresse) probably refer to the people who owned it.
  • Soil: a mixture of clay and small rocks create a well-drained soil where the roots of the pinot noir grape have to dig very deep in order to find water and nutrients.
  • Domaine area: Biological cultivation since 1990; biodynamic cultivation a few years later. 0.25 ha (0.625 acre). Average age of the vines: 37 years.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS:A carefully prepared cuisine would enhance Corton Bressandes superbly. Also, pair with slowly cooked stews, duck or pheasant, and ripe cheeses.

TASTING NOTES: "Good structure when young, without any harshness. The nose is powerful, with aromas of candied fruit. As the wine ages, spice and musk are in evidence. A good Corton has a velvety texture ("gras") to counterbalance tannin and acidity. It is very persistent on the palate and ages well". - Véronique Drouhin-Boss

Echezeaux

Echezeaux

Echezeaux

Joseph Drouhin
Echezeaux

DESCRIPTION:

  • This Grand Cru is admirably situated right above Clos Vougeot, another Grand Cru, on a gentle slope facing due East.
  • Le Musigny is just to the North.
  • The Drouhin family owns a .41 ha (one acre) vineyard there.
  • The soil is clay and limestone. On a moderate incline, facing due east.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: A carefully prepared cuisine would enhance Echezeaux superbly. Also, pair with slowly cooked stews, duck or pheasant, and ripe cheeses.

TASTING NOTES: "Elegance and perfection, two of Joseph Drouhin's tenets. The color is bright and intense. A full palette of aromas reminiscent of stone fruit (cherry, peach, apricot), cocoa, exotic wood (cedar). On the palate, the texture is like silk and velvet. In the aftertaste, the same touch of dark chocolate is in evidence. Extremely long aftertaste." - Véronique Drouhin-Boss

Grands-Echezeaux

Grands Echezeaux

Grands-Echezeaux

Joseph Drouhin
Grands-Echezeaux

DESCRIPTION:

  • Located next to the Clos de Vougeot, Grands-Echezeaux is one of the famous Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy.
  • Administratively, it lies in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux, which forms a wedge separating Vosne-Romanée from Vougeot.
  • Grands-Echezeaux (about 9 hectares) and Echezeaux (34 hectares) are the only Grand Cru vineyards belonging to this unusual village.
  • Here, as in all of the red wines of Côte d'Or, the only grape variety used is Pinot Noir.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: Serve with ripe cheeses and prime meats, such as filet mignon, fowl and venison.

TASTING NOTES: "In its youth, the wine displays aromas of great finesse, reminiscent of cherry and dark chocolate or cocoa bean, which is a delicate and sought after characteristic of this wine. As the wine matures, these aromas evolve towards other refined nuances evoking undergrowth, truffle, fine leather and sometimes light notes of cigar or cedar wood. The result is of great elegance and breed. The tannins are refined and the silk and velvet of the body are a perfect match. Very long aftertaste in which some of the aromas previously encountered are again in evidence and create the most elegant sensation." - Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Griotte-Chambertin

Griotte-Chambertin

Griotte-Chambertin

Joseph Drouhin
Griotte-Chambertin

DESCRIPTION:

  • In Burgundy, the best wines are the direct reflection of their terroir.
  • The better the wine, the tinier the surface.
  • Griotte-Chambertin is the perfect example—a minuscule square-shaped parcel, less than three hectares and the place where a remarkable wine is produced.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: The most refined cuisine is of course a must with Griotte-Chambertin: the highest grade of prime meat, the finest sauces and the ripest cheeses. The age of the wine is, of course, a determining factor: more subtle dishes are preferred with an older wine, for instance, eight-to-fifteen years of age.

TASTING NOTES: "Tasting Griotte-Chambertin is always cause for reflection: the aromas are complex and subtle, with hints of cherry liqueur, preserved cherry, fine leather, nutmeg. When the wine matures, there are hints of truffle and venison. The flavors are also arresting in their own way and the tannins, although present, are never aggressive or coarse. Long and persistent on the palate, with a glorious aftertaste". - Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Mazis-Chambertin

BS-Mazi-Cham

Joseph Drouhin Mazis-Chambertin

Joseph Drouhin Mazis-Chambertin

DESCRIPTION:

  • The Grand Cru vineyard of Charmes is located below Chambertin, next to Griotte-Chambertin.
  • Small stone houses were built on this plot.
  • The word "mazi" or "masure" used to refer to a small ruined house.
  • The soil is a mix of red clay, chalk and broken stones.

TASTING NOTES: "The wine offers and intense and deep colour with powerful and complex aromas of red and black fruits and of liquorice. Structured, with a long aftertaste it develops a lot of finesse and the tannins remains silky. Elegant. A great wine". - Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Musigny

Musigny

Musigny

Joseph Drouhin
Musigny

DESCRIPTION:

  • There is no greater pleasure for the wine lover than to drive along the "Route des Grands Crus", this narrow road that winds through some of the most prestigious vineyards of the Côte d'Or.
  • Coming from Beaune and going north, before reaching the village of Chambolle still hidden from view, we pass Grands-Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot.
  • The path starts to climb a little. We have arrived at a small promontory, bathed in sunshine, with a splendid view over the plain in the distance.
  • The soil feels light. It is strewn with small pebbles: this is Musigny.
  • The Domaine of Joseph Drouhin owns a sizeable parcel in this Grand Cru.
  • Under Robert Drouhin's exacting viticultural practices, the Pinot Noir grape is severely pruned and its yield kept down to a strict minimum.
  • Musigny is and will always be a rare wine. The grapes are still picked by hand and very gently pressed.
  • The juice is then left to ferment in a small oak vat. The skins and pips rise to the surface, creating a thick lid called "chapeau" (hat).

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir

FOOD PAIRINGS: Red meat and game are the ideal accompaniments. In fact, the simpler the preparation, the better for this extraordinarily subtle and refined Grand Cru of Burgundy.

TASTING NOTES: "Musigny is remarkable for its great purity of color. The aromas are reminiscent of violet and fruit stone when the wine is young. After eight to ten years, these aromas become very refined and complex: fallen leaves, damp earth, moss and hints of fur or leather. The tasting sensations are incomparable in terms of finesse and harmony. The tannins are elegant, although very much alive. Silk and velvet match the liveliness of the acidity. The lingering aftertaste is dominated by hints of rare, exotic woods as well as candied cherry". - Véronique Boss-Drouhin
