Drouhin Vaudon

Drouhin Vaudon - Chablis

Logo Drouhin VaudonDuring the 1960's, at a time when the Chablis vineyards were all but abandoned, Robert Drouhin believed in the potential of this wine region which, a century earlier, had been decimated by the phylloxera disease.

Attracted by the unique qualities of this terroir considered an integral part of Greater Burgundy, and as a tribute to the Joseph Drouhin family, native of this area, Robert Drouhin examined maps, spent time visiting the area, had extended conversations with the local people and remembered his tastings with Maurice Drouhin.

Very early, he selected the best vineyards in the historical and geological heart of Chablis before the INAO (the government office controlling the appellations in France) would extend the actual limits of the appellation into less typical areas.

DESCRIPTION: Chablis is the northernmost region of Burgundy, located in a dramatic circle of hills where vines have been planted for hundreds of years. In the sixties, when the Chablis vineyards were all but abandoned, Robert Drouhin recognized the potential of this region which had been ravaged by phylloxera a century before. He was one of the first Burgundy propriétaires who set about revitalizing the area. The pebbly soil derives from Jurassic (mainly Kimmeridgian) clays and limestones. It is ideally suited to the Chardonnay grape, the only permitted variety for Chablis AOCs.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay

2015 Vintage: The wines deliver superb aromas. They are rich, supple and offer a long aftertaste. The 2015 vintage is a faithful expression of the briny qualities associated with this appellation.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Chablis usually ages five-to-eight years. It is excellent served as an aperitif or with seafood, such as oysters and fish. Also fresh goat cheese.

TASTING NOTES: "A dry and fruity wine, easy to drink. Its color is pale gold with greenish hues. Very fresh aromas reminiscent of citrus (lemon or grapefruit); small pleasant touches of fern or coriander are found as well. On the palate, dry and fruity, with mineral notes. Pleasant and long aftertaste." - Véronique Drouhin-Boss

The Wine Spectator - 92 Points for the 2014!

"This is all about texture and balance, allowing the apple, lemon and stone flavors to flow effortlessly. Cleansing and elegant, with a lingering aftertaste of lemon and mineral. Drink now through 2018."  –BS

Drouhin Vaudon Chablis Les Clos - Grand Cru

Drouhin Vaudon
Chablis Les Clos - Grand Cru

DESCRIPTION: the largest and probably most famous Grand Cru, located between Valmur on the left and Blanchot on the right. The exposure is responsible for its generous and powerful character. History & tradition: it is the cradle of Chablis, already recognized by the medieval monks as a superb location for planting a vineyard. The term “Les Clos” (enclosure, in French) probably refers to the surrounding wall that they built to fence off the parcel. This wall is no longer in existence. At the end of the 19th Century the vineyard was devastated by the phylloxera disease. In the 1960’s, Robert Drouhin was one of the first Beaune propriétaires to bring it back to life. Soil: the Kimmeridgian limestone contains millions of tiny marine fossils embedded in a kind of whitish mortar which may have been once the bottom of the sea...hundreds of million years ago. This marine origin gives the wines of Chablis their unique flavour. Drouhin estate: 1.3 ha (3.212 acres). Average of the vines: 37 years.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay

FOOD PAIRINGS: It is excellent served as an aperitif or with seafood, such as oysters and shellfish, and fish.

2015 Vintage: The wines deliver superb aromas. They are rich, supple and offer a long aftertaste. The 2015 vintage is a faithful expression of the briny qualities associated with this appellation.

TASTING NOTES: “A great wine, perhaps the one most able to express what the terroir of Chablis really is like. The colour is pale gold yellow, with greenish hints. Refined nose, with aromas of lily (“fleur de lys”), honey or preserved lemon. Astounding depth and velvety sensation (“gras”) on the palate, with some delicate marine nuances. Intense and long aftertaste. After 5 or 6 years, even more complex and subtle aromas develop in the wine. A wine of incomparable finesse”. - TASTING NOTE BY VÉRONIQUE BOSS-DROUHIN

Drouhin Vaudon
Chablis Vaudesir - Grand Cru

DESCRIPTION: a famous vineyard whose relief has no equivalent in Burgundy. Its round shape and steep slope evoke an ancient amphitheater. There are two major exposures: one is due south in the northern section and the other south west in the southern section. It is one of the largest among the seven Grand Crus of Chablis. History & tradition: the name comes the French “chemin des vaudésirs” (path of the vaudésirs) cutting the vineyard down the middle. In the sixties, when the Chablis vineyards were all but abandoned, Robert Drouhin recognized the potential of this region which had been ravaged by the phylloxera disease a century before. He was one of the first Burgundy propriétaires who set about revitalizing the area. Soil: the Kimmeridgian limestone contains millions of tiny marine fossils embedded in a kind of whitish mortar which may have been once the bottom of the sea...hundreds of million years ago. This marine origin gives the wines of Chablis their unique flavour. Drouhin estate: 1.4 ha. (3.5 acres).
GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay

2015 Vintage: The wines deliver superb aromas. They are rich, supple and offer a long aftertaste. The 2015 vintage is a faithful expression of the briny qualities associated with this appellation.

TASTING NOTES: “An exquisite wine often drunk on its own as an aperitif. Pure and limpid colour, with a faint greenish hint. On the nose, fresh aromas of flower and fruit (lemony flavours) and, at times, spicy notes of coriander. On the palate: harmonious aromas bringing character and elegance. The magnitude of its Grand Cru origin and the light salty notes from the Kimmeridgian soil are in evidence. Remarkably long and complex persistence in the aftertaste”. - TASTING NOTE BY VÉRONIQUE BOSS-DROUHIN

"Domaine Vaudon is the name Drouhin uses for their Chablis.  They want to emphasize, justifiably, that they own substantial vineyards there because of the foresight of the patriarch, Robert Drouhin, who purchased vineyards there almost 50 year ago.  Indeed, Drouhin, though based in the Côte d’Or with the other major Burgundy négociants, is one of the best producers in Chablis.

The two top Grand Cru vineyards in Chablis are Les Clos and Vaudésir.  Drouhin’s 2014 from Vaudésir is stunning, delivering a spectacular combination of ripeness and flinty minerality.  Long and vibrant, the flavors continue to echo long after you swallow it.  My experience with their Vaudésir -- indeed all Drouhin’s Chablis -- is that they develop even more complexity with bottle age.  This one certainly will, if you can keep your corkscrew away from it.  Though $75 is not cheap, it’s a steal for a Grand Cru of this quality".
