Distell Environmental Awareness Campaign

Why should we strive to conserve water?

South Africa is a particularly water-scarce country. Compared with the world average of 870mm of rainfall per year, our average annual rainfall is 450mm, making ours the world’s 30th-driest country.

More than 50% of SA’s wetlands which help conserve our water have been destroyed. Existing water resources that are economically viable to exploit will be fully used by 2025 unless current consumption rates and usage trends change to be more sparing of water. Acidic drainage water from mining is a major threat to Gauteng water supplies.

Water is also the natural resource most affected by climate change. We all need to be more mindful of our water use at home and at work, and minimize wherever possible as global warming’s effects increase.

Water is a vital resource in the wine and spirits industry. It not only feeds our vines and other crops, but is also essential at various stages in the production processes.

Using less water will address our responsibility to the environment, which sustains us and grow the Group’s overall prosperity as well.
