The World's Best Value Champagnes
We go looking for reasons to be cheerful in the swanky surrounds of Champagne.
As the holiday season is around the corner, we thought it was time to turn our attention to the more celebratory aspects of life, and what says celebration more than Champagne?
After all, as Charles Dickens aptly summed up, “Champagne is one of the elegant extras in life”, and one that shouldn’t be so expensive it’s like asking for the moon. Ranging from the classic to extra dry, we have a range of styles to suit even the most discerning of palates and tightest of budgets.
To compile this list, we used data from Wine-Searcher’s Best Value Champagne page, which is compiled by an algorithm that balances average price against quality and aggregated critics’ scores. However, although this algorithm always picks superb quality wines in relation to the price, the price itself might not be what many would consider value. Hence, there has been a little bit of cherry-picking (by a human) to give you what we consider the best deals with guaranteed quality.
2008 Champagne Drappier Grande Sendree Millesime Brut Champagne
First on our list is the Champagne house, Drappier.
The name Grande Sendree references the cinders from the Urville fire, which broke out where the vineyard now sits in 1838. A blend of both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this wine spends several years in the cellars, gaining complexity. This has resulted in an aggregated critics' score of 91 points and, although it's not the cheapest on our list, at $72 from a top Champagne house, it won't disappoint.
